ENDURING FREEDOM: 53IB Commemorates 123rd Independence Day

The Philippine Army’s 53rd Infantry “Matapat” Battalion (53IB) conducts a Flag Raising Ceremony as it commemorates our nation’s 123rd year of independence and freedom from Spanish colonizers.

The Spanish colonial period of the Philippines began when explorer Ferdinand Magellan came to the islands in 1521 and claimed it as a colony for the Spanish Empire.

The period until the Philippine Revolution in 1898. The Philippine Flag was first waved at the residence of President Emilio Aguinaldo in Kawit, Cavite.

The Philippine Independence Day is commemorated every 12th of June.
