TESTING SQUAD COMPETENCY: 53IB launches ‘Matapat Squad Challenge 2020’

The Philippine Army’s 53rd Infantry “Matapat” Battalion (53IB) launched “Matapat Squad Challenge 2020” physical activity to test the competency of the battalion’s best and strongest squads.

The squad challenge intends to measure the physical strength, cohesion, unity, and camaraderie of nine-man team squads among Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, and Headquarters —the 4 Line Companies of the Battalion.

A simple opening ceremony was held on November 6, 2020 at the 53IB headquarters at Camp Sabido in Guipos, Zamboanga Del Sur with 1st Infantry “Tabak” Division Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations, G3, Lt. Col. Edgar Allan Villanueva as keynote speaker.

Lt. Col. Villanueva in his message commended the excellent performance of 53rd IB, and emphasized the importance of squad cohesion in the accomplishment of the unit’s mission.

“This Matapat Squad Challenge is not about who will win. Rather, it is about the cohesion, unity, and camaraderie that will be developed during the competition,” Lt. Col. Villanueva said.

53rd IB Commanding Officer Lt. Col. Jo-ar Herrera stressed in his message that the Matapat Squad Challenge is one way of looking for the physical and mental cohesiveness and strength of the squads while encouraging the troopers to exert their best efforts to win the competition.

“The Matapat Squad Challenge is not easy because it will demand tremendous amount of strength, stamina, speed, and agility. But we should keep in mind that winning should always be second only for the love of the game itself,” Lt. Col. Herrera said.

The Matapat Squad Challenge activities, scheduled to run until December 5, 2020, are composed of five events: (1) Physical Fitness Test (PFT), (2) Amazing Race, (3) Squad Run, (4) Titan Games, and (5) Obstacle Course.
